4+1 Program: BM in Performance/MM in Education

Note: the Music Ed 4+1 program is being revised during the 2024–2025 academic year. Details on the changes will be available once approved by the University.

Students admitted to the 4+1 program complete all requirements for a Bachelor of Music degree in music performance and a Master of Music degree in music education. The receipt of both degrees normally qualifies a student for Initial Teacher Licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Students enroll in the 4+1 after matriculating into either the BM in music performance or BM in music education. Admittance to the 4+1 is dependent on support from both faculties. Students in the 4+1 program typically complete the Bachelor of Music degree in the fourth year, then finish MM coursework and student teach in the fifth year.

The 4+1 program requires completion of the program of study specific to the Bachelor of Music degree candidates seek. In addition, students complete courses in preparation for the Master of Music (MM) with Initial Teacher Licensure in Massachusetts.
