Who can apply? 

To apply for this program:

  • Applicants must be training to be a teacher at a higher education institution in the United States, or current K-12 teacher in United States private or public schools
  • Applicants must have a Bachelors’ degree from an accredited institution with a minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) or be enrolled in an undergraduate educational licensure program.
  • As applicable, international students interested in enrolling must demonstrate the ability to read and write with proficiency in English.
    • TOEFL iBT: Total minimum score of 84, with section minimum scores of 21 in reading, 18 in listening, 23 in speaking, and 22 in writing
    • IELTS: Total minimum score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6.5 in each section.

What should be included in my application?

All applicants must submit a complete set of application documents in order to be considered: 

  1. TAT Certification Application Form*
  2. official transcripts from the highest degree conferred;
  3. a personal statement addressing your background experience, interest and commitment to teaching about Africa (1ooo word limit);
  4. resume or CV;
  5. English proficiency exam results if necessary.

*Some school districts report not being able to view the form due to security barriers. If this is the case, please fill in this pdf application form and email it to africa@bu.edu.

What are the deadlines?  

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. However, candidates are encouraged to apply in the following deadlines:

  • November 15 for Winter/Spring admission
  • May 15 for Summer/Fall admission

How much does the program cost?

Boston University’s African Studies Center as well as many of our National Resource Center partners offer professional development workshops for free for Teaching Africa Teacher Certificate participants. The cost of coursework is the responsibility of the participant. Participants may fulfill their chosen courses at Boston University as non-degree seeking students or at our partner institutions, Primary Source and the National Humanities Center.  The program makes every effort at supporting participants in their search for affordable course opportunities that are relevant to their teaching. There is no cost to transfer any relevant external class or workshop to the program.

Matriculation Status

Enrollment in this program is open to teachers and pre-service teachers, but does not offer participants status as matriculated students at Boston University. Participants receive university affiliate accounts and have access to the following resources: the Teaching Africa Library books and materials at 232 Bay State Road, free access to the Outreach Program’s workshops and events, and online use of Boston University’s African Studies Library resources.
