Claire Bloom

From Limelight to Twilight

Claire Bloom, the classic English stage actress who has also achieved success in film and television, reviewed her life and career at a gathering of the Friends of the libraries at Boston University on October 6. Bloom told the audience that roles in the English theater canon become fewer as an actress matures, even though her art is stronger than ever, and that she has had to come to the United States to find new opportunities. Some of her career highlights, she said, were playing the young

dancer in Charles Chaplin's last major film, Limelight, Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire, and more recently, Mary Tyrone in Long Day's Journey into Night. The actress has given her papers to the University's Twentieth Century Archives.Photo: Kalman Zabarsky
