Fellowships for humanities research

The annual competition for CAS Humanities Foundation fellowships will soon be under way among tenure-track junior faculty members seeking a semester's release from teaching to devote themselves to a research project in the humanities. The fellowships are available to CAS faculty members and to faculty in the creative arts.

Fellowships bring with them junior membership in the Foundation's Society of Fellows, which assists young scholars by providing a forum for research, debate, and public dialogue between junior and senior members. Junior fellows are asked to attend all meetings of the society and to present a paper based on the results of their research.

Applications for fellowships are due by November 30 and must be accompanied by a description of the candidate's proposed research project, a current vita, and a letter from the candidate's department chairman endorsing the proposed research and detailing the cost of replacing the candidate for a semester. For application forms and other information, call 353-2641.

This year's junior fellows are Deborah Kahn (art history), Sofia Perez (political science), Hallie White (MFLL), Jenny White (anthropology), and Irene Zaderenko (MFLL). The 1997-98 senior fellows are Thomas Barfield (anthropol-ogy), Zhu Hong (MFLL), Jon Klancher (English), Pedro Lasarte (MFLL), Igor Lukes (UNI), James Schmidt (political science), and Rosanna Warren (UNI).

Among its other undertakings, the Humanities Foundation provides funds to bring visiting faculty to campus, sponsors a variety of proposals for conferences, workshops, pilot courses, and other projects, funds library acquisitions, and awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students.
