Each student who attended Boston University
during the administration of President Harold Case
(1951-1967) had the opportunity to attend at least
one of Dr. and Mrs. Case's well-known
University-at-Home evenings. The Cases initiated
the program to invite undergrads to their home --
The Castle -- for what Dean Emeritus George
Makechnie calls "informal discussions on timely
topics with an easy give-and-take between them and
their host and hostess." Writing about the Cases,
Makechnie points out in his 70 Stories About Boston
University, "More than at any previous time in the
life of the University, the president's wife played
an active, albeit appropriate, role in University
affairs." He notes that before coming to BU, Mrs.
Case had been active in community affairs in
California and would be no less active in Boston.
She is shown here at a November 1964 at-Home,
sporting a Beat Holy Cross button. Phyllis Kirk
Case died on December 29, 1997, at the age of 92. A
memorial service will be held Saturday, February 7,
at Wellesley College (see Calendar, page 8).
