BU's hibernal toast to its staff, the annual
Holiday Party held at the GSU, can trace its roots
to a more reverential gathering. For decades the
University held a Christmas Convocation at H. H.
Richardson's 1877 Trinity Church. According to Dean
Emeritus George Makechnie, it was President Daniel
Marsh who inaugurated the annual service.
"Remember," says Makechnie, "almost all the schools
and colleges were in Copley Square back then, so
Trinity Church was just a block away. Trinity was
used for other events, too, such as an annual
Thanksgiving Convocation. All classes were
dismissed so students could attend." Harold Case
continued the tradition for a number of years, as
he did here at the 1956 Christmas Convocation.
