The crowds heading down Commonwealth Avenue
to the Red Sox home opener last week prompted us to
pull out this 60-year-old aerial photograph of the
neighborhood around Fenway Park. Seen in the spring
of 1939, Boston University's Charles River Campus
was just starting to take shape with the 685-705
Commonwealth Avenue block (1). Most of the nearby
buildings are still standing and have been adapted
for use by BU, such as the auto-parts warehouse (2)
that now houses the College of Communication, and
Temple Israel (3), now Morse Auditorium. Other
landmarks are the BU Bookstore (4), Beacon Street
(5), Brookline Avenue (6), Boylston Street (7), and
Mountfort Street (8). Photo by Aerial Photos
