BU prof and alum pioneer in coral reef ecology studies
Coral reefs are sometimes referred to as the rain forests of the sea. Like their aboveground counterparts, reefs are home to thousands of rare species, may contain potentially lifesaving pharmaceutical substances -- and are in danger of being wiped out by humans.

dean sees family violence as critical health problem
Not long after Elaine Alpert was named assistant dean of student
affairs at BU's School of Medicine in 1987, a third-year student demanded
to know when MED was going to add a domestic violence course. Alpert asked
him to put his ideas in writing. Family violence was the province of social
workers and the police, she figured, not doctors.

Tribal flag gives rare glimpse of Afghan past
We're hearing a lot lately about the fierce tribes of Afghanistan and
their legendary prowess at repelling foreign invaders. In light of current
events, it is intriguing to discover an artifact from one of these tribes
in the archives of Mugar Memorial Library.
