Groundbreaking for new athletic training center

On August 17, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for BU's new athletic training complex, which will be in the future Agganis Center, the sports and recreation building in the John Hancock Student Village project. Pictured at the ceremony are (from left) David Walko (CAS'68), associate director of development for athletics, former BU football player Peter Kessel (SED'76), Lucille Dougal, former BU student athletic trainers Kenneth Gould (CAS'73, GRS'85) and Chris Pilalas (SMG'75), and Gary Strickler, athletics director. After Gould presented Lucille Dougal with a plaque commemorating the groundbreaking, she gave Pilalas her husband's 1971 BU hockey NCAA championship ring, which will be displayed at the complex. On August 17, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for BU's new athletic training complex, which will be in the future Agganis Center, the sports and recreation building in the John Hancock Student Village project. The athletic training complex will be named after the late BU head athletic trainer Tony Dougal (below). Dougal (1909-2000), also a respected lecturer and author, was recognized as one of New England's foremost authorities in his field. After earning a bachelor's degree from Temple and a master's degree from Columbia, Dougal was head athletic trainer at the University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth. He became BU's head athletic trainer in 1962. Dougal was also an athletic trainer for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team in Montreal. Photo by Albert L'Étoile
