Christian Greer (CGS’04) was recently inspired by the generic artwork in a study lounge on the first floor of his residence hall at 1019 Commonwealth Ave. Inspired, that is, to replace it. “It was mundane stuff with lots of pastel colors, like paintings you’d see in a dentist’s office,” he says. So when he heard that his residence hall association was planning to turn the lounge into a social space — there’s a second, larger study area nearby, anyway — he proposed that it double as a student art gallery and he volunteered as curator. Administrators agreed. Greer was swamped with submissions, and on April 6 the gallery opened. Now on display are about 30 works by students from all over campus, and Greer says he’ll put up new pieces monthly. “I want to put up good art, but my primary goal is to build community, not to have a gallery that’s elitist,” he says. “I’m trying to be as fair as possible, and I’ll take comments and concerns about what should be displayed.” Photo by Kalman Zabarsky |
