As a medical doctor, President ad interim Aram Chobanian might not endorse laughter as the best medicine. But his remarks at the annual Senior Brunch in Metcalf Hall on April 30 showed that a healthy dose of humor can go a long way — even soothing nerves jangled by BU’s presidential search last fall.

Julie Macé doesn’t consider herself part of a “lost generation,” a designation many baby boomers have slapped on young Americans for their supposed apathy and self-absorption. In her speech to this year’s graduating class, Macé (CAS’04) will urge her classmates to shake that stereotype by becoming active members of their communities. “It’s a call to action,” she says.

The roughly 400,000 refugees who poured into Albania in 1999 must have been shocked to find Orthodox Christians there opening up their homes and offering them food and clothes. Most of the refugees were Muslim, after all, and had just escaped Kosovo, a country ripped apart by ethnic fighting.

2004 Honorary degree recipients

The Golden Greek in bronze: Arnold LaMontagne’s bronze statue of standout BU athlete, Red Sox first baseman, and community hero Harry Agganis (SED’54), the “Golden Greek,” was unveiled at a May 4 reception hosted by BU’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations and the Agganis family. The statue will be the centerpiece of the Harry Agganis Sports and Entertainment Arena, which will open in January 2005. Agganis, a Lynn, Mass., native, who starred as quarterback and first baseman at BU, was batting .313 for the Red Sox when he died unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism in 1955, at age 26. “[Nearly] 50 years beyond his death, we still sing the praises of our Golden Greek,” said BU President Emeritus John Silber. The event kicked off BU’s fundraising efforts to establish a scholarship in honor of Agganis. Pictured (left to right) are Harry’s great-nephew Greg Agganis, his nephew Michael Agganis, and his brother Phil Agganis. Photo by AP/Elise Amendola
