SSW professor named W. T. Grant scholar

Renée Spencer, an SSW assistant professor of human behavior, has been chosen to receive $300,000 from the William T. Grant Foundation to conduct a five-year study on the mentoring relationships that develop between adults and adolescents through programs such as Big Brother and Big Sister. The foundation, which supports research on the social development of young people, each year names four to six William T. Grant Scholars to receive the highly competitive $300,000 awards. Named for the late philanthropist and retail entrepreneur, they go to early-career researchers. Candidates must be nominated by their institution. Spencer’s study, which begins in July, will investigate how bonds between adolescents and adults in formal mentoring programs form and develop over time. It also will examine organizational aspects of mentoring programs, such as the time commitment that should be required of adult participants.

WBUR.org recognized as best news Web site in New England

University-owned National Public Radio station WBUR-FM recently won the 2005 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Broadcasting-Affiliated Web Site in New England for its site, WBUR.org. The award, named for the famous radio and television journalist, is sponsored by the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), the world’s largest professional organization devoted to electronic journalism. The award comes just weeks after the Associated Press named WBUR Boston News Station of the Year and gave it top honors in several categories, including enterprise reporting and talk show, for On Point. In addition, earlier this month, WBUR won RTNDA’s prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in the New England region and seven other awards from the organization.

College prep seminar offered to children of BU employees

The Office of Personnel will offer its Getting on Course for College seminars on June 29 and August 11 to all BU employees and their dependent children. The free program informs students in grade 8 through 12 and their parents about how best to prepare to meet college entrance requirements. It provides an overview of the college admissions process, financial aid, how to begin the college search, and the importance of high school course selection and involvement in extracurricular activities. More information will be mailed to eligible employees in early May. Call Patricia Papetti at 617-353-4480 or e-mail ppapetti@bu.edu with questions.
