On Monday, December 28, 2015, at a ceremony during the 2015 Alpha Omega International Convention, Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) faculty member Dr. David Dano was formally inducted to the position of U.S. Regional Director of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity (AO). Dr. Dano is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry and a Group Practice Leader for Group Practice Number 6 of the Pre-doctoral Patient Treatment Center. Dr. Dano also serves as the GSDM AO Student Chapter’s Faculty Advisor.

Dr. Dano was one of nine new AO board members honored at the 2015 AO International Convention, which took place from December 24 to 29, 2015, in Washington D.C. The convention consisted of six days of various presentations, continuing education courses, socials, and other events. AO members from across the globe attended.

In his new position as U.S. Regional Director, Dr. Dano will be involved with all aspects of managing the various Alpha Omega chapters in the United States. Some of his new responsibilities include organizing and growing the AO community, coordinating various events, serving as a liaison between AO and the dental community, and many other tasks that ensure all of the AO chapters in the U.S. are running smoothly.

Dr. Dano has served on the AO Board of Directors since 2013 in the position of Young Alumni Director.

“I am looking forward to continuing to support the Alpha Omega mission—enhancing the dental profession and lives of dental professionals worldwide by promoting and supporting ideals of global oral health, education, and the bonds of fraternity,” said Dr. Dano. “I would like to thank Dean Hutter for his continuous support and particularly for his attendance at the 2015 Alpha Omega International Convention.”

One highlight of the convention was the AO Honors Night, which took place on Monday, December 28, 2015. At the AO Honors Night several distinguished guests, including Dr. Dano and the other newly appointed board members, were recognized.

Dr. Lawrence Tabak, Principal Deputy Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), received the 2015 Achievement Medal, which is AO’s highest award. Past recipients include Dr. Albert Einstein, Dr. Isaac Schour, Dr. Selman Waksman, Dr. Jonas Salk, and many other notable dental and medical professionals.

Founded in 1907, AO is one of the oldest international dental fraternities in the world. It is the oldest international Jewish medical organization in the world. The AO community is currently comprised of more than 100 alumni and student chapters in ten different countries.

AO is also responsible for establishing two dental schools in Israel: the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine—Dr. Dano’s alma mater—and the Tel Aviv University Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine.

AO coordinates several events in the Greater Boston community including a recent continuing education event, which took place at the Boston University Castle. AO is also involved with the coordination of The Alpha Omega-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program.

“I would like to congratulate Dr. Dano on his appointment to this very important position within the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “The GSDM community is certainly fortunate to have a board member of such an influential dental fraternity on our faculty.”
