“HOVERDIVE” – 11.14 – 11.15.14

The Okeanos Collective is proud to present the premiere of HoverDive; a dynamic, evening-length dance performance inspired by the science and beauty of the ocean.

This work reflects the collaborative efforts of the Okeanos Collective – choreographer Courtney Peix, scientist Larry Pratt, composer Amber Vistein, and costume designer Jennifer Varekamp. Inspired by both Larry Pratt’s scientific research on fluid and wave dynamics, chaos and turbulence, and ocean science – biology, movement patterns, bioluminescence, ocean acidification, climate change, and communication; each collaborator uniquely re-interprets the science, exploring these ideas, and ultimately finding a much deeper connection to the majesty of the ocean.

HoverDive is an homage to the beauty, grandeur and fragility of the ocean and its inhabitants; an expression of communication through dance, music, fabric, and light. We hope to remind the audience of the grand, vast, and delicate beauty that is the ocean and its inhabitants, to take up an appreciation for the unique and balanced ecology of the world’s waters, and encourage dialogue that asks what we can do to help it.

The Contrapose Dance dancers – Nina Brindamour, Amy Caine, Maggie Foster, Molly Schwartz, Tony Tucker, Max Auger, Naoko Brown, and Jessica Smith – bring life to Artistic Director Courtney Peix’s choreography. Original lighting by Stephen Petrilli adds a new dimension of wonder.

Join us for this hour long performance that is a demonstration of how something uniquely beautiful in vision, movement, sound, fabric, and light can burst forth from the minds of a scientist, choreographer, composer, and fabric artist. Take a different look at the ocean, its currents and movements, its sounds and colors, its scientific truths through the combined spyglass of the Okeanos Collective.
