International Travel Risk Policy

Boston University’s International Travel Risk Policy provides valuable information and tools for students, faculty, and staff members planning or contemplating international travel. Please consult the policy for:

  • Guidance on how to register your international travel plans with Global Programs for planning and emergency support;
  • Restrictions on travel to high-risk destinations for undergraduates; and
  • Requirements and minimum standards for insurance and emergency evacuation coverage

High-Risk Destinations

High-risk destinations are defined by the International Travel Risk Policy as:

Countries, regions and/or cities currently under an overall Level 3 or Level 4 Travel Advisory issued by the U.S. Department of State. Boston University may also apply the designation “High-Risk” to locations that pose a specific health, safety or security concern as indicated by sources other than U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories, such as individual U.S. embassies or consulates, the Centers for Disease Control, insurers, or travel providers.

Undergraduate travel to High-Risk destinations

Undergraduate travel to High-Risk destinations is generally prohibited for undergraduates, unless approved by petition through the Global Travel Risk Assessment Committee (GTRAC) University Provost through the University’s Global Travel Risk Assessment Committee (GTRAC) petition process for an exemption. Successful petitioners may be required to undertake additional health, safety, and security precautions, schedule further training, sign special waivers, or acquire additional insurance coverage as conditions of approval. The GTRAC can be contacted at globalhss@bu.edu.
