On October 24, 2017, the members of the seminar HI 482 “History of Maritime Asia” (Instructor Prof. Eugenio Menegon; Students: Viminta Apimanchindakul; Drake Becka; Austin Coyne; Qianqi Feng; Tristan Hamilton; Caleb Ho; Tyler Joachim; Sung Jin Kim; Jiacheng Liu; Alexander Pramer; Melanie Rabin; Ao Shen; Katarina Stewart; Mengzi Yang; Yuncheng Zhang) visited the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem as part of a session on the history of New England’s early trade relations with Asia. Among the highlights was a visit, led by Asian Export Art Curator Dr. Karina Corrigan, of the “Trading in Guangzhou/Canton” gallery, containing artifacts early Salem traders brought back from China in the 18th and 19th centuries. The trip was concluded by a convivial dinner in Boston’s Chinatown, and was generously supported by a CAS Academic Enhancement Fund grant.
