Transportation, Directions & Parking

BU Maps can be used for BU’s Charles River and Medical Campuses, and includes departments, centers, schools, parking, public transportation stops, BU Shuttle stops, restaurants, businesses, and more.

Public Transit

Boston has a compact central area, making it easy to get around on foot or bicycle, or via public transportation. Public transit is generally more economical and worry-free than car ownership, which involves paying for mandatory auto insurance—not to mention the difficulty of parking in Boston.

MBTA

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, more commonly known as the MBTA or “the T”, maintains Boston’s primary public transportation system. This system of trains and buses allows for easy travel all over Boston and the surrounding area.

Schedules, route maps, and fares for the subway, commuter trains, and buses are available on the MTBA website.

BU Shuttle (BUS)

BU provides students, faculty, and staff a free mode of public transportation around the Charles River Campus and to the Medical Campus. The BUS provides transportation seven days a week with late-night service. Schedules and live tracking are available online.

Taxis

The greater Boston area is home to numerous taxi companies. It’s usually very easy to find a cab at marked stands or hail one on the street. Cabs licensed in the city of Boston are required to accept credit cards, but many companies licensed in Brighton, Cambridge, and surrounding cities accept cash only.

Parking on Campus

There are several options for parking passes and daily parking on BU’s Charles River and Medical Campuses. Visit Parking & Transportation Services for information on parking and alternative transportation in and around BU’s campuses.

Getting to BU from Logan Airport

MBTA

The service offered by Silver Line SL1 is the most convenient option and your best connection to and from the Airport with drop-off and pick-up directly in front of each Logan Terminal.

  • Take the free Silver Line Route SL1 from your terminal. This will bring you to the Red Line at South Station, where you will buy subway fare.
  • Board the Red Line train to Park Street (toward Alewife).
  • In the Park Street station, board a Green Line “B” train (toward Boston College).
  • There are several stops along BU’s Charles River Campus, from Blandford Street to the Babcock Street stop in West Campus.
  • To visit the ISSO, exit the train at the St. Paul Street stop.

Taxi

A taxi to campus may be the easiest option if you have heavy luggage or several bags. The airport has marked taxi stands and all taxis are required to accept credit card payments. The taxi fare should be approximately $20–25, and drivers expect a tip of around 15–20%.
