Laboratory of Visual Neurobiology

The Eldred lab focuses on many different aspects of retinal neurochemistry and cell biology in both normal and pathological retinas.  A wide varied of approaches are used including pharmacology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology and imaging at the cellular and subcellular levels.  One area of emphasis would be the gaseous neuromodulators nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide.  Much of the recent focus relates to the role of nitric oxide in the early neuronal pathology in diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity.  There is also an ongoing project studying the interactions of the retina with subretinal prosthesis.
