Haiti Recovery Event

  • Starts: 4:00 pm on Thursday, February 4, 2010
  • Ends: 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 4, 2010
Join the School of Law's Student Government Association (SGA), the Office of Student Affairs and the Career Development Office as they host an event to raise awareness and funds for the recovery efforts in Haiti. LAW student David Linhart will start the event by sharing some personal thoughts about his family connections to Haiti and the role law students can play in addressing the tragedy there. Also speaking will be Jean Lucien Ligonde, a BU alum whose Haitian engineering firm financed and led the recent delegation of BU faculty and graduate students to Haiti, where they discussed strategies and resources for rebuilding the country with the Haitian president and other officials. Another member of that team, Enrique Silva, a BU professor and faculty coordinator for the MET City Planning & Urban Affairs Program, will discuss the recent work of the BU team and the continuing role Americans will play in Haiti’s recovery. After the speeches—and a short period for questions—event organizers will share information with attendees on how they can donate or volunteer to support Haiti’s recovery. In addition to providing contact information for reliable charitable organizations (including information for texting donations to the Red Cross), event organizers will accept donations directly for Partners in Health, a Boston-based organization that has worked in Haiti since the mid-1980s and has received national prominence for its fast and effective response, including the opening of 13 operating rooms in Haiti to provide emergency medical treatment. Attendees wanting to donate in to Partners in Health can give cash or checks made out to BU Law—SGA. Information will also be provided regarding pro-bono opportunities for law students to register Haitians in Boston for Temporary Protected Status. For more information about the event, contact the SGA.
