The Quantitative Biology and Physiology (QBP) Training Program is an NIH/NIGMS T32 program in the Boston University Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). QBP trains PhD scientists who use quantitative, computational, engineering, and measurement-based approaches to understand biology and physiology across molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, and integrative scales. The program combines rigorous coursework, multiscale laboratory rotations, machine learning and data science training, mentoring and career development, and a strong trainee community.

What distinguishes the QBP Program:

  • Multiscale quantitative curriculum spanning molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, modeling, measurement, and data science.
  • Three to four laboratory rotations over the first year, designed to expose trainees to multiple biological scales and quantitative research approaches.
  • Training in rigor, reproducibility, and transparency, including rotation-level replication packages and thesis-level reproducibility planning.
  • Required external fellowship writing, with structured support for NIH F31, NSF GRFP where eligible, and other discipline-relevant fellowships.
  • Mentor and mentee training, annual trainee feedback, and Steering Committee oversight.
  • Career development for academic, industry, biotech, startup, government, and research-related careers.
