Who can use athletic training services at SHS?
All students participating in Varsity (NCAA) athletics, Club Sports, and Military Education’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) can use athletic training services.
How do I make an appointment with Athletic Training?
If there is an athletic trainer (AT) assigned to your sports team, your best first step is to connect with that AT. Typically, that AT will provide your treatment. In some cases, another AT may provide your care depending on your medical needs or provider availability.
If your team does not have an AT assigned to it—or you are a member of ROTC—you can request athletic training services through Patient Connect:
- Log into Patient Connect
- Go to Messages
- Click New Message
- Select Athletic Training Department (Varsity/Club Athletes)
- Select Request an Appointment
- In the subject and concern box write Requesting an appointment
- Complete the rest of the form with as much detail as possible including your full availability for an appointment
- An athletic trainer will review the request and send a message via Patient Connect regarding the appointment location and time.
Are athletic training services confidential?
Yes, your care is confidential. This means it is not shared with your coaches, teammates, parents, professors, or anyone without your written permission. Read more about our
confidentiality policy.
How much do athletic training services cost?
There is no cost for appointments for
eligible students. If a student-athlete experiences an injury or condition related to participation in their University-sponsored sport, the associated costs (such as imaging, surgery, prescriptions) will be billed to the student’s health insurance provider(s) and any outstanding costs will be submitted to the athletic injury insurance plan maintained by Boston University. The amount covered by the university’s athletic injury insurance plan is decided by the insurance company (the underwriters), not by Boston University. After all insurances have paid, the student-athlete might still have some expenses they need to cover themselves (out-of-pocket costs).
If a student-athlete is referred to specialty care such as imaging, lab work, or other services for general medical or mental healthcare, fees may apply. Learn more about costs at SHS.

How does Athletic Training work to provide comprehensive care?
We collaborate across Student Health Services, BU, and the city of Boston to provide comprehensive care.
How is it decided when a student-athlete can return to play after illness or injury?
The safe return of student-athletes to academic and athletic participation is a core responsibility of Athletic Training.
All clearance and return-to-participation decisions are made independently by the Athletic Training staff, team physicians, and Medical Director of Student Health Services & Head Team Physician based on leading medical practices and clinical judgment.
While collaboration with coaches and other support staff helps ensure an athlete’s return is effectively managed, the authority to determine medical readiness and any associated participation limitations rests solely with the healthcare team.
