Behavioral Medicine offers various workshops and groups to help you address a variety of mental health related needs. Participating in one of these options will help decrease isolation and expand your support network, while gaining effective coping skills.

Fall 2020 Groups

Building a Stronger You:

This group is for students who want to develop ways to cope with painful and strong feelings more effectively. Participants will learn and practice dialectical behavioral therapy skills related to distress tolerance and emotion regulation. While participants are welcome to discuss relevant personal life experiences and concerns, this group functions similarly to a class format in which the group leader teaches skills and then group members brainstorm ways to practice them and share their experiences of using the skills. Students are encouraged to practice these skills and apply them between group sessions.

BU Roots:

This group, which meets during the Fall semester only, is for students new to BU.  It can be both exciting and challenging to adjust to life at a new school and may not be what you expected due to the pandemic.  This group is a confidential space where students receive support and feedback from other students on issues related to adjusting to their new life, homesickness, academic concerns, relationships and general well-being.  All new Terriers are welcome!

Coping Through Connection:

Living through a pandemic creates a multitude of feelings and experiences for all of us.  This group is designed to offer a safe space for students to emotionally and socially connect with each other as they process their thoughts and feelings about its impact.  Students will learn strategies to cope, identify resources and practice highlighting moments of joy and meaning in this new reality.

Graduate Students Support Group:

Graduate students often struggle to have a space where they can authentically share their feelings and concerns about life as a graduate student. This support group is designed to provide a confidential space where you can receive support and feedback from your peers. Topics discussed in this group may include adjusting to and leaving graduate school, academic and career concerns, coping with stress, relationships and identity development.

Grief Group:

This group is designed for students who have recently experienced the death of a loved one. Members are invited to share their feelings of grief and to be supported by other students who have experienced similar losses. Students interested in attending will be invited to an individual one-time session with the group facilitator to discuss the group in further detail and to determine if the group feels like a good fit.

LGBTQ+ Support Group:

This support group provides a safe space to explore and discuss the joys and challenges of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning. This confidential and affirming group is an opportunity to connect with each other and offer emotional support. Members will explore themes, such as relationships with family, friends, and partners, coming out, being out, identity, and ways to embrace all parts of your identity.

Managing Anxiety:

Do anxious thoughts and feelings dominate your daily experiences? Do you lie awake at night worrying about tasks you need to complete? Do you avoid social situations for fear of judgment? This skills-based group is designed for students who want to learn techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy strategies. Group members share their experiences, discuss assignments, and offer support to each other as they work toward making changes and learning to effectively manage their anxiety. Students are encouraged to practice these skills and apply them between group sessions.

Mindfulness Meditation:

This 4-week group, specifically designed for emerging adults, is based on the mindfulness program, “Koru,” loved by Duke University students. Practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress, increase mental and physical wellness, and help us make decisions that are guided by our inner wisdom. Group members are encouraged to share experiences, discuss assignments and offer support to each other as they learn to integrate and practice mindfulness skills in their lives.

Navigating Relationships:

This group is designed to create a safe environment for students to better understand themselves, explore relationship patterns, and learn skills for navigating all types of relationships (including family, friends, co-workers, partners, etc.). Topics will include communication styles and skills, setting boundaries, actively listening and validation. Group members share experiences, discuss the application of skills and offer each other support. Students are encouraged to practice these skills and apply them between group sessions.

Holistic Approaches to Emotional Wellbeing:

This workshop series is an initiative to provide students with a holistic approach to addressing the challenges they face throughout their college experience, both from a mental health perspective and beyond. Join us for a casual conversation on the multifaceted approaches to wellbeing, featuring various offices and departments on campus. We hope to expand your perspectives on how to improve your emotional wellbeing, while highlighting various resources in the BU community.
