Computing Resources

As a Summer Term student, you have access to a variety of computing and network resources for communication, coursework, instruction, and research. Information Services & Technology (IS&T) supports the entire University community through its website and two IT Help Centers. Hours of operation can be found online at bu.edu/tech/about/help-center/hours.

BU login name and Kerberos password

A BU login name and Kerberos password are provided to all students. The BU login name and Kerberos password are required to access most online resources at BU, including the wireless network, course sites hosted in Blackboard Learn, and the MyBU Student Portal. Your BU login name and Kerberos password can also be used in conjunction with the general purpose personal computing lab located at the Mugar Memorial Library, 771 Commonwealth Avenue, which provides access to personal computing software and high-speed printing.

If you registered for courses using our online registration system, you already have a BU login name and Kerberos password and are all set to use these BU resources. If you did not register online and, thus, do not have a BU login name and Kerberos password, please call or email the IT Help Center. Have your BU ID number handy for a more efficient support experience.

Please remember that your Kerberos password provides access to important information, such as your student record. Giving your password to anyone, or using anyone else’s password, is prohibited by BU’s Conditions of Use and Policy on Computing Ethics. No one at BU will ever ask you for your password.

Computing and network resources

The University provides secure wireless network access, which you will see as eduroam. Information about the wireless network is provided here. You must have a BU login name and Kerberos password to access the wireless network.

All Summer Term students have access to IS&T’s personal computing lab, located on the first floor of Mugar Memorial Library. Many schools and colleges at the University also have computer labs available to students enrolled in their courses.

The IT Help Center offers assistance in all areas of computing through the website bu.edu/tech and at its two locations: Mugar Memorial Library and 179 Amory Street (across from the College of Fine Arts). Beyond support, the IT Help Center has negotiated special educational pricing on Lenovo and Apple computers, and provides information on downloading and using Microsoft Office and other software. Please see bu.edu/tech/sales for further information.

MyBU Student Portal

The MyBU Student Portal provides online access to your student records at BU. You can use the MyBU Student Portal to view and change personal information such as your address, view your student account, register for classes, see your grades, check your compliance status, confirm classroom locations, and more. To use the MyBU Student Portal, you must have a BU login name and Kerberos password.

Course sites (Blackboard Learn)

A course site is a web-based system for managing course materials. Your instructor can make announcements, share course materials, and enhance discussion, all in one easily accessible location. Blackboard Learn is the most common location for course sites used at BU. You will need an active BU login name and Kerberos password to access Blackboard Learn.

Blackboard Learn is available to anyone with a BU login name and Kerberos password. Visit this page for more information. In addition, you can access Blackboard Learn through your course listings on the MyBU Student Portal.

Not every course at BU will have a course site, so be sure to check with your instructor if you do not see your course site listed in the MyCourses section of Blackboard Learn. Once your instructor creates a course site, all students on the official roster will be automatically given access the day after they have registered.

If you are unable to access your course site, please contact your instructor for access or information on availability.
