  1. This is an excellent piece, well worth taking the time to create. Interestingly, just yesterday I was advising a graduate student in bioinformatics about her choice of research director (and consequent specialized area of study). On the “pick-the-right-single-thing-to-concentrate-on” theme, I chose to quote Joseph Campbell — a former faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College, and author of several best-selling popular books on mythology. In answer to a question (from Bill Moyers in a Public TV interview shortly before Campbell’s death in 1972) about what advice he gives to students about their life/career paths, he responded “Follow your bliss…!” It has stayed with me, and I just discovered that it tops the list on a website devoted to Joseph Campbell’s quotations:

I have used it in career-choice discussions with many students — and it invariably strikes a strong chord. Many of your speakers echoed this empowering idea and I hope the students graduating on Sunday take it to heart!

  2. This is an excellent video! Just sent it to my stepdaughter who is starting in fall at CAS. I am sure it will get her excited to be coming to this awesome place :-)

    1. To clarify, the phrases written on those folders were just aids to memory for Professor Rothman. “Take Meds” refers to a piece of advice that did not make the final cut of the video: “Always take your meds AS PRESCRIBED.” A reasonable piece of advice from a professor of public health, I think. Thanks for watching!

  3. On this the 3rd anniversary of my daughter’s graduation from COM, I am so grateful for our affiliation with BU. She is a productive, self-reliant, independent person who makes a difference in the world. I credit BU with her emergence as a productive and happy adult. Thank you again so much, BU. So very proud to be a BU Terrier Mom, always!!! I wear the T-shirt with BU pride out here in California! Hugs and best to all the terriers!

  4. These (and the Points of Departure videos) make me teary every year. Thanks to faculty and staff who share such poignant, humorous, & inspirational messages – which are as meaningful to me at this stage/age as they are intended for our graduates. As always, brilliant craftsmanship by those who make this BU Today production happen.
