Title: Sound-Size Symbolism and the Evolution of Human Communication
Location: 135 Ivy Street, Brookline, MA
Time: 12PM-1:30PM
In the field of biological anthropology, we piece together the greatest story ever told—human evolution. When did we begin to use language, tools, or culture? When did we walk on two legs or evolve such large brains? Why do we age?  Why do we love? How are we similar to our distant ancestors and how are we different? In this talk, I will introduce the concept of sound-size symbolism and argue that aspects of human communication have their evolutionary roots in the communication systems of our non-human ancestors.
This event is free to Members. Registration required by October 15.

Lunch & Learn: Forensic Genealogy Presentation at HGARC

Speaker: Melinde Lutz Byrne, FASG, Metropolitan College
Title: Naming the Allenstown Oil Drum Victims: How Forensic Genealogists Identify the Unknown Dead
Location: Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, 771 Commonwealth Avenue, 1st Floor
Time: 12PM-1:30PM

The worst case of unknown victims in the U.S. languished for over 30 years after three little girls and a very young woman were found in oil drums in a New Hampshire park. No conventional leads named them, but an amazing coincidence in a typical genealogy search revealed their killer and their names. The technique for naming people through genealogy, the study of identity and kinship, has been taught at BU since 2009. Advances in DNA testing have made a powerful tool almost infallible. Melinde Lutz Byrne’s description of the case will illustrate many of the methods routinely used by genealogists to name, locate, or reunite family members. Melinde is an anthropologist and archivist by training. She became a genealogist in 1976 after finding twins and triplets in her husband’s family. She was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists in 1993 and was invited to create a course for the BU Center for Professional Education in 2008. Since then, BU’s Genealogical Research Certificate Program has graduated over 4000 students and solved three American Jane or Baby Doe cases. Board certified since 2010, Melinde has been featured in the New York Times, on NPR, has spoken to international audiences, including the FBI CODIS administrators from fifteen countries, and has consulted on local and state law enforcement cases, as well as for Metropol in the UK. This event is free to Members. BUWG Host: Barbara Attianese

The 2018 elections ushered more women into public office than any other single election in American history. And, since the election, many women in office are creating a lot of news. Annual Lunch and Awards Presentation with Keynote Speaker Susan Fournier

Speaker: Dean Susan Fournier, Allen Questrom Professor and Dean, Questrom School of Business
Topic:
Risky Business: When the Person is the Brand
Location: 1 Silber Way, 9th Floor, Metcalf Trustee Center
Time: 12:00PM-1:45PM
We explore the high-risk/high-return proposition of person-brands: brands like Calvin Klein, Donald Trump, and Rachel Ray that are at once people and also products for sale in the marketplace. Person-brands are powerful because they can claim coveted qualities of fame, authenticity, intimacy, and cultural resonance that non-human, inanimate brands cannot. But, the person in the person-brand equation introduces risks that threaten the value proposition: people die; they misbehave; they display hubris; they—and the close insiders who know them—refuse to act always “on brand.” Can managers harness the power of person-brands while reducing the risks associated with them? We provide insight into this question through a 20-year case analysis of the Martha Stewart lifestyle brand that emphasizes the relative balance and consistency between person and brand and prioritizes the qualities that make person-brands human rather than the qualities that make them strong brands. Sponsored by Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer. BUWG Hosts: Barbara Rotger and Laura Russo
