Minor in Chemistry

The minor in Chemistry teaches the basics of general and organic chemistry, as well as one other area in chemistry of the student’s choice. The minor is designed to ensure a level of expertise that allows the student to be knowledgeable and conversant in chemistry fundamentals.

All students should refer to the Departmental Regulations section of the Chemistry Department page for important stipulations. NOTE: Students may not switch tracks in general or organic chemistry after the initial course in the sequence.

Requirements

The minor consists of a minimum of five 4-unit courses. All required chemistry courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

• CAS CH 111, 112 (or CH 101, 102, 201 or CH 109, 110, or CH 101, 116, 201)
• CAS CH 211, 212 (or 203, 214 or 203, 204, 220)
• one advanced 4-unit course in chemistry (CAS CH 232 or a 300-level or higher nonresearch course; CH 373 excluded). Students in the Modular Medical Integrated Curriculum (MMEDIC) program may substitute GMS BI 751 for this advanced course.

A student wishing to take the minor in Chemistry may use no more than two courses from a major to fulfill the requirements of the minor. A Research in Chemistry course (CAS CH 141, 142, 161, 162, 241, 242, 243, 244, 261, 262, 263, 264, 341, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346, 361, 362, 363, 364, 365, 366, 401, 402, 441, 442, 461, 462) will not count toward the Chemistry minor.
