Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery

The faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery) includes otolaryngologists, speech pathologists, audiologists, and basic scientists who are all dedicated to the education of medical students. This team works together in the management of patients with ear and hearing problems, cancer in the head and neck, and voice and swallowing problems, and the department has a division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The department strives to collaborate in many ways with the Hearing Research Center at the BU College of Engineering and with the College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College, including the STEPP Lab for Sensorimotor Rehabilitation Engineering. Many of the faculty members play prominent roles in the Chobanian & Avedisian SOM Academy of Advisors, and one serves as an assistant dean in the Student Affairs office.

The department is widely known as being welcoming to medical students. In fact, each year, several medical students choose to work with faculty in Otolaryngology on summer research projects. Many students are given opportunities to work with faculty members on projects that result in oral or poster presentations at regional and national meetings of professional organizations. Students are always welcome to spend time in the Otolaryngology clinic and can be given an opportunity to observe surgery being done.
