Graduate Certificate in Event Management

The Graduate Certificate in Event Management is an accelerated graduate-level certificate that prepares students with a solid foundation in the event and convention management process, including venue selection, design and production, stakeholder management, budgeting, contracting, and risk management. Students will develop the skills and foresight to analyze and employ the trends that will shape the experience, delivery, and outcomes of events. It is ideal for hospitality professionals hoping to gain a competitive edge or advance their skills in a new area.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of the Event Management certificate, students will:

  • Understand the fundamentals of the event, meeting, and convention sector.
  • Develop the skills to negotiate and plan successful meetings and events, including strategy, operations, venue-specific opportunities, and financial accountability.
  • Understand events as major tools for cities to display their singularity and to compete on the global stage.
  • Develop ideas for events marketing planning, operational recommendations, and event structures to ensure relevant functional protocols beyond industry norms.
  • Learn about the economic value of meetings and events for achieving organizational goals.
  • View event planning and management through the lens of Experience Innovation, where there is a deliberate focus on cultivating meaningful human interaction and memorable experiences.

Requirements

The certificate will require the completion of three courses (12 units) at SHA and a 0-unit, 300-hour work experience:

  • SHA HF 777 Meeting Planning and Special Events Management (4 units)
  • SHA SE 726 Large Venue Management (4 units) OR SHA SE 727 Mega Events (4 units)
  • One of the following:
    • SHA HF 560 Hospitality Strategic Marketing (4 units)
    • SHA HF 621 Advanced Food and Beverage Management (4 units)
    • SHA HF 768 Digital Marketing Strategies (4 units)
    • MET AD 642 Project Management (4 units)*
  • SHA HF 740 Graduate Internship in Hospitality Management** (0 units)

*MET PM 100 is a prereq/coreq for MET AD 642

**For students currently employed in the hospitality industry, the required internship will be waived.
