A History of Inclusion

This culture of inclusion still thrives on campus today.

You may know Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. But did you know that Dr. King developed his message of peace and inclusion while pursuing his PhD in theology at Boston University? Or that BU educated the first female doctor and welcomed the first black dean to a majority-white university?

Multicultural Groups & Organizations

• We’re home to the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground (HTC)—where students of all races, religions, orientations, and ethnicities come together to engage in courageous intercultural dialogues. Through programs like Coffee & Conversation, the HTC inspires students to discover their shared humanity and expand their intellectual, social, and spiritual growth.
• The India Club and the Brazilian Association. The Minority Engineers Society and UMOJA, BU’s black student union. Thousands of students take pride in their heritage through a wide range of cultural organizations on campus. To learn more, visit the Student Activities Office website.
• The Admissions Student Diversity Board (ASDB) actively recruits from multicultural communities and works with us to increase enrollment and enrich the multicultural experience of all students at BU.

LGBTQ+ Community

We are home to a vibrant LGBTQ+ community and strive to keep the conversations about gender and sexuality open, friendly, and engaging.

• The Center for Gender, Sexuality, and Activism (CGSA) is a resource center that gives a voice to institutionally marginalized groups through an intersectional approach to activism and education.
• The Queer Activist Collective (The Q) is dedicated to LGBTQ+ education and activism both on and off campus.
• The Trans and Gender Variant Listening Circle (T*LC) is a discussion-based student group in which trans and gender variant people share frustrations, successes, and stories.
• BU’s Alpha Chi Chapter of the Delta Lambda Phi National Social Fraternity, geared primarily toward gay and bisexual men (though men of any sexual orientation are welcome), is committed to social justice, friendship, and personal growth.
• BU Housing offers Gender-Neutral Housing to upper-class students.

Religious Life on Campus

• BU’s many religious organizations offer you a place to worship and resources to learn more about your heritage, including the Catholic Center, Hillel, Islamic Society, and Hindu Students Council.
