College of Arts & Sciences (Undeclared Major)

I am an incoming first-year or transfer student, who’s my academic advisor?

You will be assigned an academic advisor during summer 2025. This advisor will reach out to you via email in mid-to-late May with guidance and information about when and how to register for fall 2025 classes. Registration for fall 2025 classes will open for transfer students on Tues. June 17, 2025 and will open for first-years on Tues. June 24, 2025. To learn more, visit CAS Advising.

I am currently enrolled in classes at BU, who’s my academic advisor?

You have a professional Undeclared Advisor within CAS Advising. Your advisor’s name is available on the MyBU Student Portal under the “Academic Advising” link in “Academics.”

Who advises on degree and major requirements?

Your Undeclared Advisor will advise you on degree requirements and connect you with advisors in prospective majors. CAS Advising supports students until they declare a major, at which point the student is assigned a departmental advisor within the major. Students can arrange to meet with their departmental advisor by emailing their departmental advisor directly, by emailing casadv@bu.edu, or by calling 617-353-2400.

Who advises on Hub requirements?

Your Undeclared Advisor will advise you on Hub requirements. CAS Advising continues to provide guidance on the Hub until a student declares a major, at which point the student is assigned a departmental advisor within the major. CAS Advising is always available to provide additional support with respect to Hub advising. Students can arrange a meeting by making an appointment on Handshake, emailing casadv@bu.edu, or calling 617-353-2400.

How do I get in touch with CAS Advising?

Your Undeclared Advisor is an advisor employed within CAS Advising, thus you may email your advisor with questions or schedule a meeting via Handshake.

How do I declare a major?

You should discuss majors of interest and their requirements with your Undeclared Advisor. When you are ready to declare your major, you can submit the Major Declaration Form. Please speak with your Undeclared Advisor if you have any questions about this.

How do I apply for an Intra-University Transfer (IUT) into CAS?

Students should attend CAS Advising’s drop-in advising hours to briefly review policies and degree requirements and receive the IUT form. Students should also feel free to contact the CAS academic department associated with their desired program of study to discuss program requirements and long-term course planning. For policies regarding IUT into CAS, please consult the Boston University Bulletin.

Who supports first-year students?

In addition to all of the faculty, advisors in the schools and colleges, residence life staff, and other students services staff across campus, BU has a team of Assistant Directors of First-Year Student Success (AD) whose sole purpose is to support first-year students as they transition to college. Each first-year student has an assigned AD – you can find their name on your MyBU Student Portal under “Academic Advisors.” ADs provide guidance on a broad range of topics and help first-year students connect with the BU community – you should feel free to reach out to them with any and all questions. If they can’t answer the question, they will connect you with someone who can.

If I have a question about a specific topic, where do I go?

Often you will have more than one possible source of information about a specific topic. And sometimes, if the topic is complex, you will be encouraged to consult with multiple people. The chart below gives you a starting place for common advising topics.

Additional Academic Opportunities
