I am an incoming first-year or transfer student, who’s my academic advisor?
You will be assigned an academic advisor during summer 2025. You can expect to receive an email in mid-to-late May with guidance and information about when and how to register for fall 2025 classes. Registration for fall 2025 classes will open for transfer students on Tues. June 17, 2025 and will open for first-years on Tues. June 24, 2025. Your faculty advisor’s name is available on the MyBU Student Portal under the “Academic Advising” link in “Academics.”
Who advises on degree and major requirements?
All students are assigned a faculty advisor upon matriculation into Sargent College. Faculty advisors advise students on timely progress toward degree completion. The Academic Services Center is also available to help with a variety of questions, to direct students to additional sources of information, and to schedule appointments with an academic counselor. Who advises on Hub requirements?
Sargent students will consult with their faculty advisor on Hub requirements. In addition, the director of their chosen program will be able to advise on timely completion of Hub requirements within a specific program. How do I make an appointment with my advisor?
You can make an advising appointment with your faculty advisor by emailing your advisor directly.
How do I change majors within Sargent?
A student interested in changing majors within Sargent should meet with their faculty advisor to discuss the intended route. The Academic Services Center is also available for consultation on changing majors. To reach the office, email sarugrad@bu.edu or call 617-353-2713.
How do I apply for an Intra-University Transfer (IUT) into Sargent?
For policies regarding IUT into Sargent, please consult the Boston University Bulletin. Students interested in transferring into Sargent should make an appointment with the Academic Services Center. An academic counselor will meet with the student, evaluate previous coursework, and map out a preliminary schedule.
Who supports first-year students?
In addition to all of the faculty, advisors in the schools and colleges, residence life staff, and other students services staff across campus, BU has a team of Assistant Directors of First-Year Student Success (AD) whose sole purpose is to support first-year students as they transition to college. Tyler Rock is the AD for first-years who start at Sargent College – you can find their name on your MyBU Student Portal under “Academic Advisors.” ADs provide guidance on a broad range of topics and help first-year students connect with the BU community – you should feel free to reach out to them with any and all questions!
If I have a question about a specific topic, where do I go?
Often you will have more than one possible source of information about a specific topic. And sometimes, if the topic is complex, you will be encouraged to consult with multiple people. The chart below gives you a starting place for common advising topics.
