21st Century Cures Act: A Cure for the 21st Century?
In the most recent major, bipartisan-passed bill, Congress enacted substantial changes to the biotechnology industry. Prompted by public outcry over price and access to pharmaceuticals, as well as industry pressure to alleviate regulatory constraints, the 21st Century Cures Act purports to both tackle hindrances in the biotechnological space and drive drug and device innovation. The goal, it seems, is to reinvigorate the pharmaceutical/device industry, while promoting access to these products — but can this bill accomplish such goals? What lies ahead for consumers and the industry?
