Meet future food reporter Kaya Williams (COM’20)

Who is Kaya?

Kaya Williams (COM’20) is from Tahoe City, California, a small ski town near Squaw Valley, which is famous for the 1960 Winter Olympics. Like a true Californian, Kaya loves spending time outdoors. At home, she’s often caught skiing, running, paddleboarding, and spreading good news. Like John Krasinski, Kaya loves exploring the ideas and stories that give people hope and warmth.

What is she up to now?

Kaya is studying journalism at the College of Communication but has made sure to fill her schedule with interesting internships, rock-climbing classes, and mentorship opportunities. Kaya also hopes to dig more into her fascination with food history through BU’s Gastronomy Program. Her obsession with 1950s cookbooks is evident as she talks about the quirky recipe handouts developed by life insurance companies. She also speaks passionately about the Daily Free Press, BU’s independent student newspaper. It was through FreeP (as folks call it) that she developed the editorial, production, and reporting skills she’ll need for her career.

What’s next?

After graduation, Kaya hopes to enter the field as a food reporter for an online magazine or newspaper. She’s also thinking of exploring the world of audio journalism or applying to the BU Gastronomy Grad Program to further her food studies. Without a scholarship, Kaya notes, she wouldn’t have had the chance to study at BU, take unpaid internships to further her education, or get a real-life experience in the newspaper world.
