We’ve just survived our second winter in the midst of a global pandemic. With limited indoor activities, frigid temperatures, and endless blue-light exposure from devices—it’s safe to say our vitamin D levels are likely at an all-time low. Thankfully, spring is here, and so are some great outdoor volunteer opportunities!
With the climate changing and mental health declining, it is imperative that we seek out ways to foster a sense of community and reconnect with nature. These volunteer opportunities are perfect for getting outdoors and preserving nature. Not to mention, you’ll get to connect with other BU alumni and friends!
Help preserve scenic nature areas by removing invasive plants
Help MA’s largest nature conservation nonprofit, Mass Audobon, by removing invasive plants at the Boston Nature Center on April 16, from 9 am to 5 pm. You’ll also get to prep a new Ground Mount Solar Array to plant new pollinator plants. Dress in long sleeves and closed toed shoes—the rest is taken care of.
Join Newton Conservators, Inc. in their efforts to protect nature areas by removing invasive plants on May 1, from 9:30 am to 12 pm. Bring your kids along to Cold Spring Park in Newton for some family fun picking plants.
Practice environmental stewardship by removing trash & debris
Nobody wants to recreate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch here in Massachusetts. By volunteering with the Mystic River Watershed Association on April 7, from 3 pm to 5 pm, you can be part of the effort to protect the Mystic River from garbage pollution. Mystic River is located in Medford.
Help Friends of Spy Park remove branches, leaves, and other debris from the park on April 23, from 9 am to 11 am, in Arlington, MA.
Get your green thumb on
We all have a deep ancestral connection to growing our own food. Get back to your roots by helping nonprofit organic farm Gaining Ground in Concord transplant seedlings, spread mulch and compost, and maintain perennial hedgerows on April 30 , from 10 am to 12 pm.
