A night of trivia in four acts

Selling out in just under an hour, the Alumni Association’s first virtual BU trivia night was nothing short of a smashing success! Hosted by Quizmaster and fellow alum Ryan Bersani (CAS ’06), known around Beantown for hosting weekly trivia shows at Night Shift Brewing and at the Hong Kong Restaurant, our group of alums geared up for a night of BU themed questions. Little did our players know there would be a twist.

Act one: A surprise appearance

While our original nine teams (London’09, Livin La Covida Loca, The Three Quarantinis, The Windy City Winners, Millennial Misfits, Warren Towers’93, 17B Roomies, BU Rockstars, and The Existential Dreaders) got their thinking caps on, a handful of BU all-stars decided to shake things up.

Lead by their captain, Associate Provost and Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore, The Dean’s Dream Team consisted of the following top-notch members:

  • Christine McGuire, Vice President & Associate Provost for Enrollment & Student Administration
  • Dan Solworth, Chief of Staff, Student Affairs
  • John Battaglino, Assistant Dean of Students & Executive Director of Student Activities
  • Colin Riley, Executive Director, Media Relations
  • Daryl DeLuca, Assistant Dean of Students

Upon logging in, the All-Star team made a little wager with the rest of the participants, promising a special gift if they could manage to come out on top and beat this unstoppable force.

Act two: Let the games begin!

And with that announcement, the game was off and running (virtually of course). The night was divided into four rounds, with every round consisting of five questions scaled in difficulty and worth. Questions ranged from historical facts about the University to BU pop-culture. While teams puzzled out the answers to a few hum-dingers, they found creative ways to share some memories (and a few well-meaning taunts).

Act three: The chatbox was poppin’

Some players took to the chat to reminisce about their favorite dining hall meals. Among the most missed items were omelets from Warren Towers, stir fry from West Campus, late-night quesadillas, Shelton Hall’s crispy chicken wraps, and (of course) the famous Rhett waffles…

While others decided to stir the pot (Dean Elmore, we’re looking at you!)…

Act four: So, who took home the gold?

It’s all fun and games until you have to announce the winner. Not surprisingly, the All-Star team was slotted to win with a perfect score of 6000. However, at the eleventh hour, it was discovered that their captain had been sneaking sips of a Corona beer! Disqualified for his poor choice in libations, our runner-ups, The Existential Dreaders, realized that not everything was quite so dreadful. With a score of 5100, they took the lead and now are patiently waiting to see what Dean Elmore has in store for their prize.
