US cultural history, literary history, the history of the book, periodical studies
Ena hails from Tokyo, Japan, with a background in nineteenth- and twentieth-century US history and literature. Before coming to Boston with the Fulbright scholarship, she cultivated her academic interests in media and urban literary culture both in the US and Japan at the University of Tokyo.
Her research explores the intersection of print culture and modernity in turn-of-the-century America, with a particular focus on the development of the magazine as a popular media form. Examining publishers’ and editors’ ambivalent attitudes toward the modern materialistic world, she hopes to shed light on the roles magazines have played in shaping modern American culture and public spheres.
