James Bessen, an economist, is executive director of the Technology & Policy Research Initiative at Boston University School of Law. He researches innovation, technology, and inequality, including how technology impacts jobs, wages, and skills and how firms perpetuate gender and racial income inequality. Bessen’s most recent book, Learning by Doing: The Real Connection Between Innovation, Wages, and Wealth, looks at history to understand how new technologies affect wages and skills today. His research has been widely cited in the press as well as by the White House, the US Supreme Court, and the Federal Trade Commission. Bessen has also been a successful innovator and CEO of a software company.
