Boston University

I have been an educator and investigator in women’s and perinatal health inequities for 35 years, and have directed the MCH Center of Excellence at Boston University for 15 years. My work focuses on the connections and disconnections between the lives of women and all pregnant people, and the health care systems and policies intended to serve their needs across the life course. My work particularly sheds light on gaps between reproductive health care and primary care for those with chronic conditions, with a sharp focus on the deeply entrenched racism and fragmentation that stand in the way of equitable, holistic and quality care for BIPOC people, harming their health and chances for survival. Collaborating with over 70 diverse stakeholders from across the U.S., I co-led the initiative, “Bridging the Chasm between Pregnancy and Care over the Life Course”, which produced a data- and narrative-driven policy agenda for the U.S. to address racial injustice in health care after people give birth.
