Campaign Report
Yep, that's us making all that noise!
close video
During the quiet phase of our first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, we received more than $420 million in gifts and pledges. And Boston University Trustees led the way with significant early gifts. Now, we’re turning up the volume. Way up.
Since our public launch in September 2012, we’ve brought in an additional $106.2 million, which means we’re more than halfway to our target of $1 billion. So far, at least 450 gifts range from $100,000 all the way up to our largest donation of $35 million. More than 20 percent of what we’ve raised is international, including a $1 million gift from the Alumni Network of China. And we’re only gaining steam. Not just in dollar amounts, but in the impact of those gifts:
- Real estate mogul Stephen R. Karp (CAS’63) has pledged $5 million to support a professorship and a scholarship in pediatrics at the medical school.
- With the help of a $1.66 million gift from Bloomberg Media Group CEO Andy Lack (CFA’68) and an $833,333 matching gift from Alan Leventhal (Hon.’06) and his wife Sherry, the College of Communication is putting $2.5 million behind an endowed professorship that will focus on new business models for journalism.
- Sumner M. Redstone’s $18 million donation will construct a new annex building to the Law Tower, injecting even more energy and space into a growing program.
- The Century Challenge, which seeks to increase student financial aid, has gained considerable notice. For any new endowed undergraduate scholarship commitment of $100,000 or greater, BU will match, dollar for dollar, the income distributed for those awards for a period of 100 years. So far, $8.6 million has been pledged, including $3 million from Robert and Diane Hildreth, parents of two Terriers.
And it’s not just the number of zeros on the check, nor the generosity of alums alone. The father of one recent graduate pledged to match every gift his daughter made, and an anonymous basketball-loving medical school parent gave $14,000 to build an outdoor court behind its new student residence.
So, yes, we are definitely on full volume.
Transformative Gifts
- Trustee Rajen Kilachand After his record-setting donation, Kilachand (GSM’74) pledged an additional $10 million, bringing his total gift up to $35 million.
- Trustee Allen Questrom Questrom (SMG’64), retired chief executive officer of several of the nation’s largest department and specialty stores, and his wife, Kelli, gave $10 million to the School of Management.
- Trustee Peter Paul Paul (GSM’71), president of the mortgage banking company Paul Financial, LLC, has pledged $10 million to fund Career Development Professorships.
- Trustee Kenneth Feld Feld (SMG’70), chairman and CEO of FELD Entertainment, has given more than $10 million, including gifts for three endowed professorships.
- Frederick Pardee Pardee (SMG’54, GSM’54, Hon.’06) gave BU an additional $7 million to support global education and research, and advance the human condition.
- Trustee Richard Shipley Shipley (SMG’68, GSM’72) endowed the Beverly A. Brown Professorship—honoring the public health advocate and wife of President Robert A. Brown—with a $4 million gift.
