Members of the Class of 2022 hold a special distinction: first in history to have earned their degrees under the guidance of the BU Hub, the University-wide general-education program established in 2018.

During their four years at BU, all undergraduates in the class explored a variety of disciplines and ways of thinking through the Hub, as will those who follow. With a broad selection of courses, cross-disciplinary experiences, and experiential learning, the Hub continues to equip students with essential intellectual capacities—knowledge, skills, and habits of mind—designed to help them to thrive in their personal, professional, and civic lives.

The BU Hub lets students choose from more than 500 courses across all 10 undergraduate schools and colleges.

Now that a first class has graduated, the University has sharpened its focus on examining the experience. Adding to quantitative and survey data gathered each year, assessment efforts—ranging from examining course evaluations to revisiting academic performance measures—began in spring 2022 with a comprehensive review of 3,300 individual pieces of student work by 46 faculty from across BU’s schools and colleges. Their full report was shared with faculty in October 2022.

Meanwhile, the Hub continues to evolve, reflecting our rapidly changing world. In fall 2022, a new, two-semester sequence of Hub courses focusing on social and racial justice launched, where students investigate the historical and systemic bases of inequity and develop tools for engaging in advocacy and action. The Hub is also extending its reach by continuing to integrate with all BU Study Abroad experiences.

Whether at home or five time zones away, BU strives to send into the world students with the knowledge and know-how to make a difference.
