What have you been doing since you’ve graduated?
Since leaving BU, I have obtained a MS Human Osteology & Funerary Archaeology at the University of Sheffield on a Fulbright Scholarship and a graduate certificate in Non-profit Management through the Harvard Extension School. Work wise, I held a one year post-graduate position as a cultural resource specialist at U.S. Army Fort Huachuca, AZ, and currently work for the George Washington Foundation in Fredericksburg, VA. As their permanent Research Archaeologist, I am based at Washington’s childhood home, Ferry Farm, where I conduct research on small finds for publication and carry out collections management. Additionally, I participate in the summer field season and various forms of outreach.
How did your experience in the program shape your professional and personal life?
The program offered me a range opportunities that I was able to take advantage of such as field schools, volunteering in labs and the Gabel, and serving as a mentor to fellow students. In doing so, the program perfectly prepared me to pursue further degrees and a career in archaeology while making me a more competitive candidate.
What interactions with members of the Archaeology faculty did you value most during your time in the program?
While I loved all of my classes, the interactions that I valued most with the faculty consisted of discussions held during office hours and when I was volunteering. Some of these related directly to the program and my future, but many were simply friendly conversations. Talks like this allowed me to feel closer to the faculty and realize I was supported. I still remain in touch with my advisors and enjoy speaking with them.
If you could give a piece of advice to your past self, what would it be?
I would say that I should spend less time stressing over getting the perfect grade/GPA and devote more time to myself.
