School of Medicine surgeon Gary Gibbons named CEO of Quincy Medical Center

Quincy Medical Center trustees recently named Gary Gibbons, a School of Medicine professor of surgery, as president and chief executive officer of the 232-bed community teaching hospital.
A nationally recognized leader in the field of diabetic and vascular surgery, Gibbons was appointed interim president and CEO in May and had previously served as the hospital’s chief of surgery. He is executive director of BMC Foot Care Specialists, a multidisciplinary practice specializing in the prevention and treatment of diabetic wound and foot problems. He also is a member of BMC Surgical Associates, a multispecialty group of surgeons who practice at Quincy Medical Center (QMC).
“I am honored to be entrusted with leading Quincy Medical Center, which is a true jewel among Massachusetts community hospitals,” says Gibbons.
Gibbons received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed his surgical residency at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and New England Deaconess Hospital. During his career at New England Deaconess and the Joslin Diabetes Center, Gibbons pioneered many of the current treatment approaches for diabetic patients with lower extremity problems.
A board-certified general and vascular surgeon, he is an international lecturer on the subject of diabetic foot and vascular surgery and has published several articles in clinical journals and book chapters.
In 1999, QMC formed the Alliance for Quality with Boston Medical Center and the School of Medicine to bring academic medicine to the community. BMC physicians direct the QMC departments of medicine, surgery, anesthesia, emergency medicine, and psychiatry. Additionally, BMC physicians who are board-certified in a range of medical and surgical specialties work with community physicians to ensure the continuity of patient care. Gibbons joined QMC in 2000 through the program.
“We are delighted that Dr. Gibbons is assuming this new role,” says Robert Curry, chairman of the QMC board of trustees. “His clinical and leadership skills and commitment to quality patient care will be a tremendous asset as we continue to move Quincy Medical Center forward.”
Quincy Mayor William J. Phelan adds: “Having had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Gibbons over the past few months, I am delighted to hear that he has agreed to be president and CEO of Quincy Medical Center. The fact that Quincy Medical Center has attracted such an accomplished individual speaks volumes for the medical center’s bright future and the Quincy community at large.”
