Use of term ‘refugee’ insensitive
I was surprised to see BU Today (September 8) join some television news reporters in referring to Americans affected by Katrina as "refugees." Specifically, you referred to our Tulane students as "academic refugees." Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines refugees as "those from another country who seek refuge." Calling our fellow citizens refugees adds to widespread questions about how these citizens are viewed and why the response to the hurricane by our government was too little too late.
