Looking to the Next Generation of Engineers
ENG Prof. Uday Pal appointed chair ad interim of the department of manufacturing engineering.

Uday Pal, a College of Engineering professor of manufacturing engineering, has been appointed chair ad interim of the department of manufacturing engineering by Dean Kenneth Lutchen after Thomas Bifano stepped down as chair to become director of the Photonics Center.
As chair ad interim, Pal will help in “defining a new direction and vision for our department and college,” he says, “that will attract students based on our research strengths and course offerings in the areas of design, materials, and systems.” Pal, who has 6 years of experience in industry and 16 years in academia, joined ENG as an associate professor in 1995 and was promoted to professor in 2000.
“Uday has an extraordinary record of accomplishment in materials science and engineering coupled to the manufacturing of materials for structural and new energy applications,” says Lutchen.
Pal has authored or coauthored over 100 publications and holds 20 patents in the areas of electrochemical processes, fuel cells, sensors, membrane separation, and metals processing. He has taught courses ranging from materials thermodynamics and kinetics to manufacturing processes.
“I am in complete agreement with Lutchen’s vision of our college — educate the next generations of engineers to lead and create new technologies, advance new frontiers of knowledge, and give back to our society,” says Pal.
