On post-Balanchine vulgarity, ghastly ice dancing, and what it means to be alive
Mark Morris tells it like it is
Internationally acclaimed choreographer Mark Morris hardly fits the laced-up notion of ballet that people outside the world of dance might imagine. Morris curses, he shouts, he interrupts, and he laughs. A lot. His longtime friend and colleague Mikko Nissinen, the artistic director of the Boston Ballet, is notably more reserved. But the powerful visions of both men melded in a recent discussion at the Tsai Performance Center, where they talked about Grand Slam, Four Powerful Works; Four Intriguing Choreographers, a new collaborative series that is being performed through March 26 by the Boston Ballet. The event, sponsored by the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, featured a short dance segment and a talk with Morris and Nissinen. It is moderated by Rachel Yurman, Boston Ballet’s director of development communications.
