SED's Jeanne Paratore recently conducted a seminar for educators working to help struggling readers.
Jeanne Paratore, a School of Education associate professor in the department of literacy and language, counseling and development, recently conducted a professional development seminar in Washington, D.C., that advised educators on intervention strategies for struggling readers.
Titled Supporting Struggling Readers: Learning from Excellent Teachers, Paratore’s workshop introduced participants to new research on effective instructional strategies for children struggling in language arts and then showed video clips of how urban schools throughout America are implementing this research.
The January 21 seminar was sponsored by the District of Columbia Public Schools, in cooperation with the International Reading Association.
“[Paratore’s] workshop was extremely well received and led to a deeper understanding of the philosophy, pedagogy, and methodology of excellent reading instruction,” says Barbara Tierney, assistant director of government relations for the International Reading Association. Paratore is currently researching classroom grouping practices and family literacy.
