Weapon of war turned corporate symbol
The mace, originally a weapon of war, has evolved into a symbol of institutional authority.

The mace was originally a weapon of war designed to damage an opponent’s armor, but it eventually evolved into a symbol of institutional authority. The academic mace, held by ENG Professor Theo De Winter during the 2005 Matriculation Ceremony, represents the corporate authority of Boston University. Designed in the 1980s by Arthur G. B. Metcalf (SED’35, Hon.’74), late chairman emeritus of the Board of Trustees, it is carried at the front of formal academic processions at events such as Commencement.
