Department Chair Appointed at ENG
David Castañón is the new chairman ad interim of ENG’s electrical and computer engineering department.

David Castañón, a College of Engineering professor of electrical and computer engineering (ECE), is the department’s new chairman ad interim.
He succeeds Bahaa Saleh, an ECE professor and the department chair for 13 years. Castañón will serve while the search for a permanent chair is under way. “I was honored and pleased that the college would have the trust in me,” says Castañón, recipient of the ECE department’s 2006–2007 Teaching Excellence Award.
The new chairman is already looking ahead. “I want to start the process of thinking about what the department should become in five years,” he says, adding that he wants to engage faculty in that process.
As chairman, Castañón will evaluate faculty performance, search for faculty to fill current vacancies, and assist the department in developing new research directions.
Castañón is also a codirector of the BU Center for Information and Systems Engineering; he will continue to teach his regular courses. “It’s going to be a very busy year,” he says. “But I’d hate to give up teaching.”
