ENG Associate Dean Appointed
Selim Ünlü is the new ENG associate dean for research and graduate programs.

For Selim Ünlü, a College of Engineering professor of electrical and computer engineering, there’s nothing like getting a head start on a new position.
Ünlü returned from a yearlong sabbatical in July to begin his post as ENG’s associate dean for research and graduate programs, which he officially assumed on September 1. “It’s exciting,” Ünlü says. “I found myself working in my new position before it actually started.”
The position was redefined by ENG Dean Kenneth R. Lutchen when the internal search for candidates began last semester. The focus of the associate dean has shifted from overseeing ENG graduate programs to strengthening the school’s research initiatives, which Ünlü says was his biggest motivation to apply.
“Grant funding is becoming different,” he says. “There are more group grants at established universities. That’s an area we should emphasize.”
In addition to identifying new research opportunities, Ünlü will develop and strengthen collaborations with industry, foundations, and the government; coordinate cross-cutting research within ENG; and assist faculty in building and maintaining strong research programs.
