Name: Adam McLaughlin
From: Suffern, New York
School: College of Engineering
Major: Electrical engineering

Why did you choose BU?

Boston University’s great location, convivial students, and tremendously reputable engineering program made my choice of where to go to college rather easy.

What are you most looking forward to about Boston?

Meeting new people every chance I get and finally living in a place that does not require a car to go out and have fun.

What will you miss most about home?

I hate to have such a cliché response, but without my friends and family, I would simply not be the person I am today. I will definitely miss being with my best friends from high school. However, I will be able to see them during breaks. I’ll miss being able to attend football games at my high school as well, because that is something I have done very often over the last four years.

What will you miss least about home?
The fact that in order to go out somewhere with friends, I would have to drive at least a half hour away from home.

Describe your favorite high school memory.
It is difficult to pick just one memory, but my final high school swim meet last winter is easily one that I will never forget, not only because of the fun times I had, but also because it was the last time I actually swam with my high school team. I was far from being the best swimmer on the team, but the underclassmen still held me in high respect for who I was as a person. I look forward to going to some of their meets next year during the winter break.

What high school activities do you hope to continue at BU?

Definitely Ultimate Frisbee and the Dog Pound. I tend to be an intense, energetic person at times, especially when I’m having fun playing Frisbee or watching an intense sports competition between rival schools. I also tutored often in high school, in math, physics, and Italian. I love to help others who may be struggling to understand math or science, so I would definitely be interested in volunteering as a tutor at BU.

What new activities do you want to try?

I am really willing to try anything that I am asked to. I am specifically interested in the intramural sports that I never played in high school because I did not have enough experience or enough time due to my other activities.

What is one of your long-term goals during your time at BU?

I want to make friendships that will last a lifetime as well as prepare myself for graduate school and a successful career in engineering or whatever my life may lead me to. These last four years have been the best of my entire life, and I hope I can say that once again when I graduate from Boston University.

What are you doing this summer to get ready for your first year of college?

I’m working at CVS in Ramsey, N.J., in order to make money, and I’m learning about college life from all of my friends who came home from their respective colleges. I’m practicing how to do my own laundry as we speak.
